Highlights of Current Local CWL Activity


The CWL caters to the Cape Breton West Islanders Annual Hockey Banquet


For sixty-six years, St. Peter’s Parish Catholic Women’s League has been a vibrant part of our parish and the community of Port Hood.

Following are some highlights of our annual activities.

Rosary is said at wakes and the Scriptural Rosary is prayed on October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and on April 26th, the Feast of our Patroness, Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Hot meals are served following funerals.

At the All Souls’ Day Mass, candles are lit in memory of deceased parishioners.

Members participate in World Day of Prayer with the members of St.. Stephens-Jubilee United Church..

Mass cards are given for deceased parishioners and immediate family of members.

A mass is said monthly in St. Peter’s Church for living and deceased members of the CWL.

Members choose Prayers Partners at meetings and pray for each other for the month.

Get well, baby congratulations and sympathy cards are sent to residents of the community. Birthday and Christmas cards are sent to our seniors.

Gifts of Religious articles are given to children making First Communion and Confirmation.

Crucifixes are given to newlyweds and grade twelve graduates who serve in parish ministries.

A bursary is awarded to a grade twelve high school graduate. Donations are given to youth undertaking educational travel.

For the past few years, our counsel has sponsored a child through Chalice.

Members attend Diocesan Fall Conference and Spring Convention.

The CWL organizes a Fall Bazaar and Auction each November and other fund raisers as necessary. We cater to wedding meals and other dinners as requested.

Financial donations are made to many worthwhile charities, such as: Mass for Shut Ins, Christmas Daddies, Inverary Manor, Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Cape Breton Regional Hospital,.Paraplegic Association, Strait Area Right To Life, Seminarian Fund, Development and Peace, Campaign Life, Friends of Christmas, Friends of Mary and L’Arche.

Substantial financial donations are made to St. Peter’s Parish and votive candles are supplied for use at Eucharistic Adoration in the parish chapel

The WRAP Campaign (White Ribbons Against Pornography) is held annually and signatures are collected and sent to Ottawa.

Members participate in The Life Chain and support Pro-Life causes.

A special Mass is held to bless all married couples and recognize the sanctity of marriage.

The President lays a wreath in the annual Remembrance Day service.

We write letters to government and other agencies on current issues and legislation and on local issues such as the cutting back of operating room hours at the Inverness Hospital.

We are proud of our members and the time and talents that they have invested in the league. So many of our mothers and grandmothers would be so proud that their legacy is continued. A huge thank you to all the CWL members and members of our community who work at our activities, who patronize our events, who support us and pray for us in our work.
